Greenland Selected for Boiler System Replacement at Soo Locks

Greenland Enterprises has been selected to replace the boiler system in the steam plant building at the Soo Locks in Sault Sainte Marie, MI. The $6M design-bid-build project includes the demolition and removal of an existing boiler system and related mechanical equipment and the install of three natural-gas package boilers that will each provide 5M BTUs per hour.

The effort includes numerous upgrades to related systems and infrastructure to include a larger condensate return tank, ventilation improvements, automatic chemical treatment, feed water heating and a control system that will tie into the existing supervisory control and data acquisition system (SCADA). Greenland will also construct a utility tunnel and trench to connect the steam plant building with the Poe Lock gallery and perform other necessary building improvements.

The project is a challenge given the location between the Poe and Davis locks and the requirement to access the site via water for delivery and removal of the construction equipment and boilers.  The project will be substantially complete by October 2020, with site restoration complete in June 2021.
